How to change a cloth nappy

How to change a cloth nappy

This may sound silly but I am amazed at how many parents don’t know the procedure of changing a nappy, even a disposable nappy! So here is a step-by-step guide to changing a cloth nappy.

  • Collect what you need to clean your baby's bottom. Typically this would be one or two wet cloth wipes. If it is just a wet nappy you will need 1 wipe however If you're facing an enormous poo, you might need two cloth wipes and some toilet paper. You should also have something ready to put the nappy on or in (perhaps an old ice cream container).

  • If you are using a two piece system, lay the cover out first, then the cloth nappy on top of it, and then the liner. Set it next to you so you are ready to go. NOTE: You only need to change the cover if it has poo on it otherwise you can reuse the same cover at this stage. If you are using a pocket nappy, make sure you have put the insert in the nappy.

  • Open your baby's nappy. If there is poo, wipe the worst of it off with toilet paper and then clean the soiled areas with the wipes.

  • Put the dirty wipes inside the ice cream container. Then lightly roll the nappy up and put in into the ice cream container as well.

  • Slide the clean nappy / cover combination into place under your baby's bottom.  Fasten the nappy first and then the cover and then finish dressing your baby.

  • Put baby somewhere safe (don’t leave them unattended on a change table) and then dispose of the poo, flushable liner (if you used one) and toilet paper in the toilet bowl, and pop the nappy and reusable liner (if you used one) into the nappy bin.

  • If you're using a pocket nappy, don't forget to shake the insert out into the bucket.
