Cloth Nappy Covers / Wraps

Why do I need a wrap?

The wrap is the outermost waterproof layer of your re-usable nappy system and this is what prevents the moisture in the nappy leaking out onto clothes.  It also provides a second layer of containment to prevent leaks from newborn explosions.

It is most important to own good quality covers as these are what makes the nappy leak proof. I believe you really do get what you pay for with covers. If parents skimp on spending that extra $5 on a cover they could end up changing their baby a lot more frequently than necessary. A good cover is absolutely crucial to making cloth nappies work.

Most of our parents probably used the fluffies or PVC covers but these are not the most comfortable or breathable leak proof option available today. Apart from creating a sauna effect, PVC is very rough on a baby's new skin and does not seem to last the distance because it is essentially a cheap product.

What is a PUL Cover?

A PUL cover, in my opinion, is the best all-round cover available.

A PUL cover is normally made of polyester with the inside of the cover having a polyurethane layer sprayed on to laminate the fabric. This makes it waterproof but still very soft any pliable. By laminating the fabric, it gives the wrap a high degree of water resistance without compromising the breathable quality needed for the comfort of your baby. When cared for properly they will last.
Most PUL covers can be washed with the nappies and dry in minutes. They are my favourite for day and night time use.

How many covers will I need?

Unless a cover is attached to the nappy like a pocket or an all in one, it will not need to be changed at every nappy change. Some parents can use a clean cover at the start of the day and use another clean one for overnight.  Or sometimes it is possible to use the same cover for 24 hours.
However, once poo makes contact with the cover it needs to be washed. I generally suggest that customers have 4 covers so they have one on baby, one in the wash, one drying and one ready to be used.
When using a fitted nappy system (Bamboozles or FlexiTots) we suggest our customers have one wrap to every four nappies, as one wrap will last several nappy changes before requiring washing. This generally makes them last longer because the laminate is not getting washed every time the nappy is being changed.

So what is so special about Tots Bots Flexi Wraps?

This is the softest strechiest nappy wrap / cover on the market.  It has multi directional stretch creating the most snug and comfortable fit on your baby.

  • Our wraps are worn over top of our FlexiTots and Bamboozles
  • Tots wrap's are made of polyester. The inside of the wrap has a polyurethane layer sprayed on the inside to laminate the fabric. This makes it waterproof but still very soft and pliable.
  • Because of their soft, non wicking leg binding our Tots Wraps will give your baby the most comfortable fit and will be gentle on their lovely new skin.
  • They are snug fitting and use a soft Aplix fastening system that crosses over, enabling them to expand as your baby grows.
  • It has multi directional stretch creating the most snug and comfortable fit on your baby.
  • Totsbots PUL wraps are perfect for day or night use.

Why would someone use a fleece wrap and how do they work?

Fleece wraps are a great night time wrap option and fantastic for babies with sensative skin.

  • Fleece wraps hold the wetness in , whilst allowing moisture to evaporate.
  • Fleece covers both work quite differently from PUL.  With PUL, the cover is used contain the moisture, while still allowing a little air to pass through.
  • Fleece wraps allow much more air in and out of the nappy and this air-flow can allow some evaporation of moisture from the nappy.

So while they contain the moisture in the nappy they can actually help get rid of some of it as well. This makes them a really good option for overnight when the largest amounts of wee are produced.  Aside from what most people think, this actually makes them the coolest cover option because the cooling effect of the evaporation makes the cover a personal, bum-sized air conditioner.

When should I avoid fleece covers?

The only times I would avoid using a fleece cover is if you are using a synthetic nappy or if your baby is sitting in the car or pram for extended periods.  The lack of airflow will restrict evaporation and could potentially cause leaks as fleece covers are not technically water proof the fleece is simply a highly water resistant fabric.
