CARE OF NEW NAPPIES - IMPORTANT:
Firstly soak all of your nappies in a bucket of cold water for 24 hours to the absorbent fibers to their maximum making them absorbent immediately. Then pop them through a normal wash and then once they are dry they will be ready for you to use. We suggest not using the nappies overnight on a toddler until the nappies have been in full time use for about 2 weeks.
WHAT DO I DO WITH SOILED NAPPIES?
When you remove a soiled nappy, fold the Aplix laundry tabs together to protect them then simply shake off any excess solids into the toilet and give the nappy a quick rinse if necessary. When washing a wrap, make sure the Aplix on the wrap is done up to protect it from getting caught in the wash or even better, place them in a laundry mesh bag. Put your soiled nappies into a dry bucket with a fitted lid to keep the smells in and little hands out. Wet nappies go straight into the bucket. If you’re worried about smells, a few drops of tea tree oil in the bucket are an option as it acts as a sanitizer whilst keeping any smells at bay.
WHAT ABOUT BLEACHING & SOAKING AND FABRIC SOFTNERS?
Chlorine Bleach and other soakers which contain oxygen bleach are best avoided. If you are having smell issues, it is ok to soak your nappies for a very short period of time and we recommend you use NapiSan original. The reason we avoid them most of the time is because with regular use they could damage the elastic in your nappies & covers, and some are harsh on fabric which may shorten the lifespan of your nappies. Sunshine is the best sanitizer and whitener of all, so line dry whenever possible.
NEVER use any fabric softeners on your nappies as it will coat the fibers of your nappies and make them unable to absorb any liquid.
HOW DO I WASH MY NAPPIES?
Some parents like to do a pre-rinse cycle in cold or warm water before putting the nappies through your normal wash cycle. This will get the worst of the wee out of the nappies before your normal wash. For washing, Tots Bots suggest you wash in warm water (40 to 60 C) using half the amount of your normal washing powder or 1- 2 Tablespoons (per load) of Tots Bots Nappy Potion which is natural and sanitizes nappies at only 30 degrees.
Using too much washing powder can cause a residue build up in your nappies which may decrease their absorbency and be irritating to your baby’s skin. However cold washing is generally fine too. Because the detergents we use today are so effective we don’t always have to warm wash. If you want to keep your nappies really soft, a quick 10 minutes in the tumble dryer before hanging out will do the trick. If you use a tumble dryer regularly, ensure you only use the dryer on a warm setting. Do not tumble dry on hot.
HOW DO I WASH USED COVERS?
Covers can be used a number of times before washing. Machine wash in cold or warm water using your normal washing powder and line dry. As they dry fast, tumble drying shouldn’t be necessary but if it is, use the low/cool setting.
WHAT WASHING POWDER SHOULD I USE?
We recommend using Tots Bots Nappy Potion. You only need to use around 2 tablespoons for a top loader wash or 1 tablespoon for a front loader. A capful of Dettol fresh in the wash is a great option every now and then to give your nappies a real freshen up.
Avoid using any Laundry Powders that contain Sodium Bicarbonates (Baking Soda) or enzyme powders as this will deteriorate your nappies and void your product warranty. Do not use white vinegar to rinse your nappies.
DO I NEED TO USE A LINER?
Liners sit between the nappy and your baby’s bottom. Liners can be flushable, disposable or reusable. Using liners is completely optional. While we find that while many parents never use liners, liners serve a number of purposes that may be useful. These include keeping your baby's skin drier, making solids easier to dispose of and protecting your nappy from staining by creams or ointments. Our Bio Soft Spun Lace Liners are flushable and biodegradable and septic tank friendly.
HOW LONG WILL MY NAPPIES TAKE TO DRY?
On average, they will line dry in a day, tumble dry in an hour or dry overnight in a hot water cupboard. Bamboozles take longer than a cotton nappy because of the way their different fibers absorb. FlexiTots will dry faster and absorb more, the more you use them. Pocket Tots and Easy Fit Fluffles are our quickest drying nappies.
