Nappies - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you explain the difference between the three main fastenings?

  • Aplix: Fastens just like a disposable nappy with squares of hook and loop. Most preferred by dads!
  • Nippa /snappi: Toddler proof stretchy fastener that is safe and easy to use. It has small plastic teeth that grip the terry loops giving it a snug, comfortable fit.
  • Popper: Rows of little plastic poppers to give a secure fit. Totally toddler proof but can be a bit fiddly for dads with big fingers or grandparents with arthritis.

Q: How do I decide which nappies are best for me?

  • If cost is most important choose birth to potty nappies - EasyFits, Pocket Tots and Bamboozles
  • If drying time is most important choose FlexiTots, Fluffle EasyFit or Pocket Tots
  • If you need a slim fitting nappy choose FlexiTots, Bamboo EasyFits or Pocket Tots

To make your decision easier we have a provided a simplified nappy benefit guide below:

Q: How long will my nappies last?

This largely depends on how many you have, what fabric your nappies are made out of and how they are washed.  The less nappies you have, the more they are washed so they will wear out faster.  For example, If you have only 10 nappies and they are all washed every day, they will be washed twice as many times than if you have 20 nappies and you were only washing 10 of them each day.  The more nappies you have, the less they are washed the longer they will last.

However in saying that you may prefer to get by with the minimum number of nappies on your first child and purchase a brand new set for your second child in either case, the price will generally work out to be about the same.

As far as fabrics go, bamboo is biodegradable so it will not last as long as a synthetic nappy because synthetic fabrics can not breakdown like natural fabrics.

It also depends on how parents wash their nappies.  If the nappies are soaked, the elastics and fabrics will deteriorate faster because they are sitting in chemicals for prolonged periods of time, causing them to wear out faster.  If a drier is used to dry the nappies everytime they are washed, this may cause the nappies to wear out faster than if they were line dried.  It can also depend on the type of laundry powder or liquid used as some are harsher than others.

Q: How many nappies will I need?

Our packages are designed to take the guesswork out of using cloth nappies and they make choosing and using cloth nappies easier than ever.  These packs allow you to be flexible in your choices and will maximize your savings.

Trial Packs: If you want to see the nappies before you buy a bigger package or if you are not 100% sure you want to go with cloth nappies, a trial pack is the one to start with.  This gives you three different styles of nappies plus samples of our liners, brochures and a booklet about using cloth nappies.  A great way to decide which nappy you like the best!

Starter Packs:  are a great way to begin using cloth nappies or split the cost of your nappies over time.  If you just want to use them every now and then to give your baby's skin a break out of disposables or would like to use a combination of brands and styles, starter packs are a great place to get started.  These give you 5 nappies (and a wrap if applicable) which is enough to use cloth on a home day or to combine with other brands.

Part-time packs: are designed for parents who are interested in using a combination of both cloth nappies and disposables together. If you are wanting to use a combination of cloth and disposable nappies, our partime packs are perfect.  These packs contain 10 nappies which is enough for part time useage giving you either 5 per day or 1.5 days worth of changes.  With pocket nappies, because they dry so quiclky, you could invest in a couple of extra inserts so that you dont have to wait for the inserts to dry before you can use the pocket again.

Full time packs: are ideal if you plan to use cloth nappies either full time or most of the time.  If you plan to wash daily you will need 15 size 1 nappies and 4 size one wraps and the same again in size 2 once your baby is ready to move into the second size. (If you want to wash every second day we recommend you buy another 5 nappies and 1 or 2 wraps)

Birth to potty packs: are designed to maximize your savings and provide you with all the nappies you will need for your baby from birth and up to 18kgs. If you are use our EasyFit Nappies, Pocket Tots or Bamboozle One Size Fits All Nappies where you only need one size of nappy, then you will only need to purchase around 20 nappies in total to get you from birth right through to toilet training.
